Harold V. Smith*

Class of 1954

  • President Home Insurance Company

As a youth, I studied the lives of successful Americans so that I might become one myself.

Harold Smith's first job was as an egg handler for $18 a month. In his teens, he got a job as a demonstrator for the Victor Talking Machine Company. While working there, he was discovered by the president of a Philadelphia insurance company, who offered him a job at his firm. Smith rose rapidly through the ranks, becoming president and chairman of the board of Home Insurance Company.
