The son of a minister, Daniel Poling was born in 1884 in Portland, Oregon. He earned his first 25 cents picking beans in Oregon's Yamhill Valley. He graduated from Dalles College, was ordained in the United Evangelical Church in 1906, and quickly became an active prohibitionist.

In 1922, Poling began preaching at the Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan and giving weekly radio addresses. He became editor of the Christian Herald in 1927, and its owner in 1939.

As an athlete, scholar, journalist, and youth counselor, Poling was one of the nation's leading figures in religion and public life. He was president of the International Society of Christian Endeavor and later president of the World's Christian Endeavor Union. He was a widely read author, who wrote more than 300 book reviews annually. He earned two degrees and 12 honorary degrees. He received a War Department citation for his work as a war correspondent and several citations and plaques from B'nai B'rith, the American Legion, and the American Federation of Labor.
