25 Outstanding Students from Louisiana Awarded 2017 Horatio Alger State Scholarships Worth $10,500

Through the generosity of Horatio Alger Member William J. Doré, the Association awards young men and women from Louisiana with scholarships to pursue higher education

WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 25, 2017) – Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, today announced that 25 students from Louisiana will receive the prestigious Horatio Alger Louisiana State Scholarship in the amount of $10,500. These young men and women are recognized for their admirable commitment to continuing their education and serving their communities, despite facing adversity.

Horatio Alger Association Member William J. Doré began funding this scholarship program in 2001 in recognition of deserving young men and women from Louisiana. Since that time, nearly 1,000 Louisiana Scholars have been awarded more than $9 million. Now in its 17th year, the scholarship is open to high school seniors in the state who maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, exhibit financial need and demonstrate perseverance in overcoming personal challenges. Applicants must plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an accredited non-profit public or private institution in the state of Louisiana.

“Each year, the Louisiana Scholars inspire me with their steadfast commitment to furthering their education despite the adversities they have faced in their young lives,” said Mr. Doré, Horatio Alger Association Member, Class of 2000. “I am honored to be included as part of their personal histories, and am proud to partner with an organization that recognizes their achievements and helps them on their path towards a successful future.”

The 2017 Horatio Alger Louisiana scholarship recipients have maintained an average GPA of 3.66 and an ACT score of 24, while coming from households with an average annual income of $18,670. Scholars have access to a variety of resources including college preparatory support, access to guidance and crisis counselors as well as mentoring programs.

“We are grateful to have William J. Dore as a Member of this Association, who, despite all of his personal successes, humbly provides deserving Louisiana Scholars an opportunity to pursue a college degree, and ultimately, their dreams,” said Tony Novelly, chairman, Horatio Alger Association. These Scholars are the future leaders of our country, and I look forward to witnessing all that they will accomplish in their college years and beyond.

Horatio Alger Association was founded in 1947, and since 1984, it has administered one of the nation’s largest privately-funded, need-based scholarship programs. The Association has awarded more than $125 million in undergraduate, graduate and specialized scholarships to students from across the United States (including all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico) and Canada. In 2000, 16 years after the establishment of its National Scholarship Program, Horatio Alger Members began funding scholarships concentrated in each state to further the Association’s mission of helping deserving young people pursue their collegiate goals.
