15 Resilient Students Awarded William J. Doré Scholarships Worth $10,500 from the Horatio Alger Association
Through the generosity of Horatio Alger Member William J. Doré, the Association provides young men and women from Louisiana with scholarships to pursue higher education
WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 15, 2019) – Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, announced that 15 students from Louisiana will receive the prestigious 2019 Horatio Alger William J. Doré Scholarship in the amount of $10,500 each. These young men and women are recognized for their unwavering commitment to pursue their dreams through higher education, despite facing adversity.
Horatio Alger Member William J. Doré began funding scholarships in 2001 and since that time, 1,055 students from Louisiana have been awarded more than $9 million in scholarships. Now in its 19th year, the scholarship is open to high school seniors in the state who maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, exhibit financial need and demonstrate perseverance in overcoming personal challenges. Applicants must plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree at McNeese State University.
“I’m continually inspired by the tenacity exhibited by the Horatio Alger Scholars from Louisiana and am honored to help assist them in their pursuit of higher education,” said Mr. Doré, a 2000 Horatio Alger Award recipient. “This scholarship program is one of my greatest long-term investments. Nearing 20 years, I’ve had the unique privilege of witnessing these Scholars graduate from college and go on to transform our country for the better.”
The 2019 Horatio Alger William J. Doré Scholars have maintained an average GPA of 3.67 and an ACT score of 24, while coming from households with an average annual income of $23,553. Recipients have access to a variety of resources including college preparatory support, guidance counselors and mentoring programs.
“The Association extends its deepest gratitude to Bill Doré for his continued investment in the lives of these Louisiana Scholars, who are all committed to pursuing their dreams of higher education,” said Terrence J. Giroux, executive director, Horatio Alger Association. “As a long-time donor, Bill has certainly made a lasting impact on the lives of our nation’s future leaders.”
Since the establishment of its scholarship programs in 1984, more than 25,000 students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Canada have received more than $175 million in undergraduate, graduate and specialized scholarships. In 2000, 16 years after the establishment of its National Scholarship Program, the Association began funding scholarships concentrated in each state to further its mission of assisting deserving young people to pursue higher education. Additionally, Horatio Alger Members fund a series of Specialized Scholarships, which target students attending specific academic institutions or pursuing certain degree programs.
